I think that this is a really neat idea for teachers and students. It's so much easier for me to just come home and read on the internet then it is to lug home a heavy book and read it from there. I started using Beyond Books for my freshman World History classes in the spring of 2000. I began using it as a supplement to our text. I found that the students were more likely to read from the internet than they were from the text. In fact, I had students who I knew would never take their book home but began reading the Beyond Books sections that I assigned. As a result, I swapped roles the following year. During the school year we just completed, I used Beyond Books as my main source. Student brought their textbooks to class everyday, but they never had to take them home. Therefore, the textbook became the supplement to Beyond Books. Of 165 freshman, only a handful did not have internet access at home. For those who did not, they could simply use the computers at school to read the Beyond Books assignment during their "free time" or simply print out the reading and take it home (this does eliminate some of the unique links that are offered). Furthermore, I used an on-line assessment program called WebCT to create quizes, etc... for students to complete after their BB readings. We are looking to keep only a class set of textbooks in our classrooms and focus primarily on BB for the future. The other World History teacher is nearly computer illiterate, yet she feels very comfortable with using BB. I have a 36" monitor in my room for viewing the internet. This helps in discussing the readings. Access to a lab would be very beneficial as well.
