School Library Journal Review

Carol Marshall, Bridgeport Public Library, CT

Beyond Books is a subscription Web site geared to current and approved curriculum needs of middle and high school students and their teachers. It is also available for home use. It is designed to make full use of the information on the Internet, in a format that is advertising-free, and pre-approved by an academic advisory board. Subscribers can find in-depth and comprehensive articles on topics in social studies, science, language arts and literature.

Guest experts come online regularly in a chat forum to answer students' questions. Recent guests have discussed the weather, Edgar Allan Poe, colonial women and riding the rails. All chat sessions are monitored and archived.

Each program is designed to parallel established school curriculum, using Internet sources that have been selected for their subject content. Articles, lesson plans, student quizzes, teacher resource guides and links provide additional resources to complement standardized coursework.

If a school or individual purchases a program, they have use of it for one year. Through the "Teacher Door," users find lesson plans, strategies, tips and an index to correlated national and state standards. Although the subscription is available for home use, the "Teacher Door" link is not. This is unfortunate since home schooling parents would benefit from the material.

Beyond Books provides a wealth of information, and is easy to use [and] convenient. The site is plumped up with sidebars, guest chats, maps and pictures. Beyond Books is a recommended secondary reference for schools. Homeschoolers might find this an even more valuable tool.
