How do I copy a picture from my browser? Here's how to copy and paste photographs, drawings, or diagrams from Beyond Books into other documents, such as projects or lessons.- Windows users: Right-click on the picture, choose "Save Image As" or "Save Picture As," and store the picture on the hard drive or removable media.
- Macintosh users: Move the mouse over the picture, hold down the Control key and click the mouse. From the menu, choose "Copy Image" or "Save This Image As" and store the picture on the hard drive or removable media. Alternately, you can simply drag the picture onto your desktop.
Note: Except as expressly permitted by our Terms of Use, you must obtain written permission from Beyond Books, or the third-party owner of material appearing on the website, for any copying, redistributing, or publishing of any Beyond Books content or third-party content.
How do I copy the text from my browser? To quote brief passages from Beyond Books pages, follow this procedure to copy the text from a webpage and paste it into other programs.- Windows users: Left-click the mouse and drag the cursor over the text. With the mouse still positioned over the text, type Ctrl+C, or right-click and select "Copy" from the drop-down menu. Move the mouse to where you want to paste the text, then type Ctrl+V, or right-click and select "Paste" from the drop-down menu.
- Macintosh users: Click and drag the cursor over the text. Copy the text by typing Command+C (Apple+C) or by selecting "Copy" from the Edit menu. Move the mouse to where you want to paste the text, then type Command+V or select "Paste" from the Edit menu.
The copy and paste functions may also be used to look up a word in the online Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary by copying the unfamiliar term and pasting it into the dictionary box on any unit or focus page. Note: Except as expressly permitted by our Terms of Use, you must obtain written permission from Beyond Books, or the third-party owner of material appearing on the website, for any copying, redistributing, or publishing of any Beyond Books content or third-party content.
How do I get rid of the line endings and extra spaces in my word processor?- To remove white space (consecutive spaces) from pasted text, place the cursor at the top of the Microsoft Word document. From the Edit menu, click on "Replace ..." In the dialog box that opens, enter ^w (caret+w) beside "Find what". Beside "Replace with," enter a single space (press the space bar once). Then click on the "Replace all" button to replace all consecutive spaces with a single space.
- To remove paragraph breaks from pasted text, follow the same procedure to open the Replace window. Beside "Find what," enter ^p (caret+p). Beside "Replace with," enter a single space (press the space bar once). Then click on the "Replace all" button to replace all paragraph breaks with a single space. With this method it will be necessary to insert any desired paragraph breaks manually.
How can I know what is hyperlinked and what is not?If text is underlined, it's "hot" and you can click on it to go to another webpage or to a specified location on the current page. If the cursor changes to a pointing finger icon when you hover over a picture or text, it is "hot" and you can click on it. Sometimes text is underlined but not hyperlinked. This is discouraged by web designers -- your best clue is that the curser will not change to a pointing finger. Some web designers occasionally turn off the underlining. Again, the pointing finger curser is your best guide. If you see hyperlinks in two different colors, one color represents pages you've already visited, and the other represents pages you haven't visited.
I sometimes get error messages. What are they?If you receive the error message "404" or "Not Found", it means that the server could not find the webpage. It means that it was either removed or moved to a different address. If you receive the error message, "Server Down" or "No DNS", the server that hosts the webpage could not be contacted. It could be a temporary problem which will be resolved shortly (or not!), or it could mean that the host no longer exists, or it could mean that your Internet service provider is having a problem locally or "upstream," between your server and the Internet outside your local area. If you see the message, "Unable to locate the server," it usually means that you mistyped the name or that the server name no longer exists.
How can I tell when a webpage is finished loading? You will usually see a series of "Reading File ... Done" messages at the bottom of your browser screen, followed by a "Document Done" message. A webpage often comprises a text and several graphics. Each one has to be loaded for your browser to show you the full document.
What does the Reload/Refresh button do?Your Reload or Refresh button renders the page again from the information stored on your local machine. By pressing Ctrl+Refresh or Ctrl+Reload, you are asking your browser to retrieve the webpage again from the remote server. This is helpful if the page has changed, but you are still seeing the version that is kept cached on your local system.
Some webpages have several windows, often one down the left, one across the top or bottom, and a main one. What is that? Some webpages are built using what's called "frames," in which your browser window divides into sections, some with their own scroll bars, for example. You can right-mouse click in a frame and choose "Open Frame in New Window."
How do I print a page?Click on the "Print" button on the browser toolbar or select "Print" from the File menu. Or, using your keyboard, type Ctrl+P (Windows) or Command+P (Macintosh). Please note that some webpages are designed to look best on the web and may look somewhat different on paper. Different browsers and even different printers may print the same webpage differently.
