Introduce students to how we study the past. Give them the opportunity to determine if they would rather approach the past as an archaeologist, anthropologist, historian, or geographer. Students will research the roles of these professions then share with the class what they would prefer as a career.

Have your students explore the lives of some of the very earliest people. In this lesson students are introduced to prehistoric people: their way of life, tools, food, clothing, and shelter. Students complete a short project to demonstrate their understanding of the concepts of the lesson.

Grade Level• Middle School Time Period2 class periods plus time for completing projects
Have your class enter the exotic world of mummification. Show your students how ancient Egyptians made mummies, take your class on a virtual field trip to the Canadian Museum to see the materials and tools used in the process, and engage them in a number of online activities. Finally, have each student make a mummy and sign his/her name, in hieroglyphics, of course.

This lesson will introduce students to Hammurabi's Code. After a short introduction, students will act as judges in eight legal cases based on a system of law that believes in "an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth." Students will then check how their decisions compare to those of Hammurabi's Code by going online to take a quiz on the same questions.

For the ancient Greeks life was different depending whether you lived in Athens or Sparta. Take your class on a virtual tour of the Acropolis to introduce the area. Then have students compare different facets of life in these two great city-states.

Up to Mount Olympus: The Gods and Goddesses of Ancient Greece
Grade Level• Middle School Time Period1-2 class periods plus time outside of class
Take your students to the top of Mount Olympus to visit the gods and goddesses of ancient Greece. After the tour have them work on a project about their favorite god or goddess. Other class activities are included to use with a unit on ancient Greece.

Take your class on a virtual tour of Ancient Greece. Visit archeological sites in ancient Athens, Delphi and Knossos. This lesson can be used to introduce a unit study of Greece or during the unit. Be sure students have a passport.

Taking a Bath in Ancient Rome

Students are off to Ancient Rome to tour the famous Baths of Caracalla. They will have the opportunity to spend time in the palaestra, apodyterium, tepidarium, caldarium, frigidarium and enjoy the local entertainment.

Exploring Ghana and Great Zimbabwe

Have your students explore the Kingdom of Ghana and Great Zimbabwe and experience the culture of these areas. Students will take a virtual tour in Ghana to taste the cultural life today and a walking tour of the ruins of Great Zimbabwe.

Take your students on a four-day virtual hike along the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in Peru. No need to worry about parental permission forms, flies, high altitude, carrying food and supplies, or dysentery. Share student journals of their reactions to what they saw and did each day.
