Simple Tips for a Good Interviewby Errol Uys
Do some research on the subject before the interview. Jot down the main themes you plan to explore. Make a list of key questions.
Be punctual and dress for the occasion. It's OK to interview a local rock band in old jeans. Wear something appropriate if you're going to collect information from your grandma's best friend. Check that you have a notebook and spare pens. If you use a recorder, remember that not all people are comfortable with having every word taped. Make sure to ask for their permission.
Don't rush into the interview. Introduce yourself and establish a rapport with the interviewee. First, get names and basic details correct. Ask your questions, listen and let go! Listen carefully to answers. Don't immediately jump in if they lead away from your themes - you never know what gems you might uncover. Always leave the door open to call back, if something is unclear or incomplete.
Remember, the 90% perspiration/10% inspiration rule! You may use 10% or less of the material from a good interview. Don't try to decide what to keep or reject on the spot. Later you will have time to make a thoughtful choice.
Don't wait a week to write up your notes. Do so while the interview is fresh in your mind.
