- The Rock Doctor Presents Sedimentary Rocks
Regarding sedimentary rock formation, remember three by two: there are three types (clastic, chemical, and bioclastic) formed by two methods (compaction and cementation). The Rock Doctor provides concise explanations of each of these terms.
- Chalcedony
Ancient humans used chalcedony to make a variety of objects, ranging from projectile points to cups and bowls. The USGS has collected information, arranged by state, on the many types and occurrences of this class of gemstones prized for their durability and beauty.
- Sedimentary Rocks
All sedimentary rocks are made of accumulating layers of a particular substance. Biologic sedimentary rock is made of accumulated layers of dead creatures. At this USGS webpage, just the right amount of information is accumulated on this and two other types of sedimentary rock formation.
- The Coral Reef of the Florida Keys
Reefs are a type of biologic sedimentary rock formed from the calcium carbonate produced by coral. This National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association website introduces the Florida reef tract (the third largest reef in the world) and explains its growth, role in the ecosystem, and threats to its existence.
- Exploring for Oil: Clues in the Rocks
For the moment, at least, creature comforts such as cars and crayons depend on a continuing supply of oil. And successful oil exploration depends on a knowledge of rocks. So Britain's National Grid for Learning has developed a website, of which this page on limestone identification is but a part, on the intimate relation between oil and rock. Blood may not come from turnips, but squeeze the right rock and bingo black gold.
- Navajo Sandstone: Story of Jurassic Time
Jurassic era volcanic eruptions in what is now southeast Arizona forced a herd of dinosaurs to migrate into a vast dunescape in search of water and food. Traces of their presence can still be seen today in Colorado, where their footprints in the sand were transformed over time into Navajo Sandstone. Talk about big feet they make Shaq's look tiny by comparison!
- Sedimentary Rocks
Clastic is Greek for "broken," so it makes sense that rocks classified as clastic are made from pieces of other rocks. This middle school webpage briefly explains and illustrates the three types of sedimentary rock: clastic, organic, and inorganic. One type of organic sedimentary rock is often used by Bart Simpson. What could it be?
