      Wendell Willkie was such an unlikely candidate that when he captured the Republican nomination in 1940, pundits referred to it as "The Miracle at Philadelphia." Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending!), Willkie would go on to defeat at the hands of Franklin D. Roosevelt.
