- academic discipline: Highest level of organization of Beyond Books programs. Beyond Books programs are divided into six academic disciplines: Social Studies, Science, Literature and Language Arts, World Languages, and Electives.
- correlations: Beyond Books correlates its content to national standards and to those of many states. To view detailed listings of state and national standards and to see how these standards are addressed in Beyond Books content, please visit the Correlations section of the Teacher Door area.
- focus topic page: The content of this page develops a topic of the unit area.
- interactives: Beyond Books content that requests input from the user. Interactives supplement Beyond Books programs and serve as activities or assessments. They include educational activities, quizzes, movie-style presentations, and listening activities. Beyond Books interactives may require audio or video plug-ins (such as QuickTime, Windows Media Player, and RealPlayer) or the Macromedia Flash plug-in.
- links page: A page that accompanies each focus topic. The links page contains an aggregation of carefully reviewed, rated (on a scale of one owl to five owls), and summarized links all directly related to the specific topic.
- unit area page: Webpage introducing a broad unit within the Beyond Books program. On this page subjects are identified that will be explored in more detail on the focus topic pages.
- log in: The process of entering a user name and password in order to gain access to the Beyond Books website. This protects access to the user's subscription.
- log out: The process of clearing the user name and password of a user. This is a good practice to prevent the user's access from being used by others.
- owl rating: Rating given a website linked to from Beyond Books. Websites are rated from a low of one owl (good) to a high of five owls (excellent). Beyond Books editors rate each website in eight categories. The computer then uses a formula to determine the owl rating for that site.
- program: A Beyond Books program is a self-contained website comprising online text, activities, assessments, and other materials. A program may be used as a supplement to or a replacement for a textbook. Beyond Books currently offers 25 programs in five academic disciplines. Most Beyond Books programs are designed to cover one half of a school year. The program is the smallest unit currently offered for subscription. Beyond Books programs are organized by academic discipline (such as Social Studies) and subject area (such as American history).
- program contents page: Webpage containing the outline of a Beyond Books program and a means to navigate to other programs.
- program page: A webpage within a Beyond Books program, such as a program introduction page, unit area page, focus topic page, or links page. You need a Beyond Books subscription to access most of these pages with your user name and password.
- program introduction page: Introductory page of a program, containing an explanation of the program and a program outline.
- study questions: A set of questions accompanying each Beyond Books unit area or focus topic. Access the study questions by clicking on the button "Study Qs" in the purple left column of any Beyond Books unit area or focus topic page.
- subject area: Secondary level of organization of Beyond Books programs. Beyond Books programs are divided into six academic disciplines, each containing one or more subject areas. For example, the subject areas under Social Studies are American history, European history, government, and world cultures.
- subscription: Purchase of access to Beyond Books content by either a school or an individual. A Beyond Books subscription may include one program, one academic discipline or suite, or full access to all Beyond Books content. Subscriptions are available on a monthly or yearly basis to individuals, or on a yearly basis to schools.
- Teacher Door: Repository of information for teachers, available only to Beyond Books users with a subscription and teacher access. The Teacher Door includes lesson plans, correlations to state and national standards, program-specific teacher guides, and strategies for using Beyond Books in the classroom. Future additions for teachers will also appear in the Teacher Door section.
- teasers: Short descriptions of websites that appear in the purple left column of Beyond Books unit areas and focus topics. Clicking on each teaser opens a new browser window and links to the Internet site containing the information source.
- user name and password: Each subscriber to Beyond Books is asked to complete the registration process and set up a user name and password. These two pieces of information are used each time the user visits Beyond Books to gain access to areas of the website in accordance with his or her subscription.
