- Shakespeare's Globe
The theater that Shakespeare's company built and performed their plays in has an interesting, and somewhat mysterious, history. This massive site is devoted entirely to the building in which the Bard made a name for himself, and covers its Elizabethan as well as its contemporary history. Tons of cool graphics and gobs of links.
- The Shakespeare Resource Center
If you have any interest in William Shakespeare, or even if you don't, we think that you will find this site incredible. The site on Shakespeare, it covers just about everything having to do with the man, his work, and his times, in a very manageable and engrossing way. While its own text and graphics are great, its real strength is in the wealth of links that it provides to other good pages. Have a look you won't be disappointed.
- Everyman
Everyman is the best surviving example of the genre known as the morality play. In it, the play's "everyman" protagonist is informed by Death of his impending end. What does the hero do with this knowledge? Find out at this site, where the anonymously penned 15th-century work is presented in its entirety in Medieval English!
- History of the Renaissance Play
Put together by active members of the ubiquitous "Renaissance Faire," this site gives a brief summary of the transition from medieval Christian theater to the drama that was written and performed in Elizabethan England. The site is pretty skimpy on substance, but does provide a complete list of the era's important playwrights.
- Everyman: A Study in the Design and Production of Medieval Drama
One college student decided that his senior project would be to stage an authentic performance of Everyman, and this webpage grew out of that decision. Along with providing readers with a wealth of solid background information on morality plays, in general, this page also details specific aspects of Everyman that make it a unique piece of drama for modern audiences. The combination of historical data and production information gives this page a unique spot on the web.
- Catholic Encyclopedia: Moralities (morality plays)
Check out the Catholic Encyclopedia's 1913 entry on morality plays. This site offers background information on the history and evolution of this theatrical genre.
- York Cycle of Mystery Plays
The Cycle of Mystery plays was performed in York, England, from 1376 to the 16th century. The plays, based on the Bible, were performed on Corpus Christi Day, in a series of processionals. In 1988, a Medieval drama group in Toronto, Canada, recreated the performances exactly as they had been performed in Medieval York. See pictures from this event, along with explanatory text, at this Catholic University of America site. Plenty of links to Renaissance drama sites too.
