- Cell-ebration: How Cells Work
Who's ready to cell-ebrate good times? Well, head on over to the cell-ebration from the University of South Dakota. In the midst of your excitement, learn how cells work, review the functions of organelles, or take the Internet quiz. Don't miss the pictures of organelles and an electron micrograph of the familiar cell membrane.
So, What is an Organelle? This is a great place to review the structure and function of parts of the cell.

- Biological Environment: Golgi Complex
If you've been wondering just how to make it into the History of the Universe, here are some possible suggestions. Start by transforming yourself into six flat membrane disks, each about 1 micrometer in diameter (as far as how to do that, you're on your own). Then secrete some enzymes onto the proteins passing through you so they will be modified for use in the cell membrane. That would be quite the accomplishment oh wait! That sounds just like the Golgi Apparatus!
- Golgi Complex
Imagine a bucket full of water with a layer of floating ping pong balls on the top. Good, now you know what membranes are like! The ping pong balls cover the water, yet you can stick your hand through them. When you pull it out again, the ping pong balls fill in the hole your hand made. The golgi complex acts in the same way, allowing certain proteins to pass through.
- Golgi Apparatus
Hey, psst! Want to make some glowing Golgi apparati. Take a cell, soak it in the preserving agent formaldehyde, then pour on some stain so that the tiny parts of the cell are visible. Voila! Instant Golgi bodies. Ignore the tongue-twisters on this webpage, but enjoy the bright pictures this University of Illinois website has to offer.
