- The Crescent Moon of Ramadan
      Valentine's Day is February 14. Halloween is October 31. Ramadan is ... wait when is it? The beginning of the holy month of fasting known as Ramadan is determined not by a specific date, but by the phase of the Moon. When the crescent moon is sighted at the end of the Islamic month of Shaban, which is usually in late fall or early winter, Ramadan begins. This site shows the view of the Moon from locations around the world. Although not up-to-date, this site explains how Muslim followers know when Ramadan begins.
- Female Hero: Shagrat al-Durr
      A woman's place is in the kitchen? anyone who suggested that to Shagrat al-Durr, might have found himself headless or worse. Shagrat al-Durr was the first female sultan of the Delhi Sultanate. She also happened to be one of its most ruthless rulers. Taking the reigns from her deceased husband, Shagrat battled off the armies of France. After remarrying, she remained the "true" ruler and eventually murdered her new husband to remain in control. Although her acts were questionable, many regard her as a hero and a model for strong women everywhere.
- The Complete Works of Christopher Marlowe
      English poet and playwright Christopher Marlowe based his works on many different subjects, one of which was the life of Timur the Lame. Marlowe wrote two five-act plays about the famous Mongol conqueror. (Unfortunately, the second one never equalled the success of the first. Didn't he know that sequels usually stink?)
